WHAT TO EXPECT:
Sewing is a fun, therapeutic hobby! If you think this is something you would like to invest in lifelong, then purchasing your own materials is worth it. The list of supplies below are the basics of what will be needed for class. You can choose to share items with a family member or friend, to keep costs down. Please purchase whatever is most economical for you. Do your research and compare prices! Looking forward to spending this time with you! —Melanie Pena
Necessary *& Optional Supplies (Compare prices with Amazon, Walmart, etc).
*Asterisk means this item is optional
Portable Sewing Machine - est: $100 - 200 depending on the kind of investment you want to make. Well known brands are Janome, Brother, Singer. I recommend 1 per family, couple, or partner. You may want to consider partnering up to share supplies with a friend or family member.
If you buy a used one (say off FB Marketplace), understand there is a risk in doing so. Make sure it has knobs that have different stitches and that it’s a working one. I will not be able to assist with non-working sewing machines.
Extension Chord : Please bring your own extension chord. These are relatively inexpensive at Walmart.
Carrying Case or Small Luggage : To carry most of your items in.
Rotary Cutting Mat : small size to be able to carry 24x18
Cost can range from $25-$30
Acrylic Sewing Ruler : Price ranging from $9 - $25 depending on the size. Average size 6 x 24
Rotary Cutter w/ Extra Blades : average size 45mm - price ranging from $10 - $15
Thread : any color of your choice , can cost about $2 - $5 a spool at Walmart.
I have many spools I’ll be bringing into class if you want to hold off on buying
Sewing Pins : Average cost around $5
Fabric/Tailor’s Scissors* : These can range from $12 - $55 depending on sharpness and heavy duty material. You cannot use regular paper cutting scissors on fabric. This is optional if you plan on only using rotary cutter, but depending on the project being done, sometimes having fabric scissors come in handy
Snips Scissors : These are small scissors that “snip” off thread - will come in very handy. Average $10, can find for lower price
Tailor’s Chalk or Water Soluble Fabric Marking Pens: Average $5, whichever you prefer, your choice
Seam Ripper : Average $5
Cotton Fabric : Try to get quarter fats (about $5), more economical, you may want to get fun prints for back up for projects and plain/ugly ones for practice. Try not to purchase a full yard of fabric, start with small quarter yard fabrics first. Some folks sell on marketplace for very cheap.
¼ fat or ¼ yard of stretchy fabric : will go over basic stitching for stretchy fabric, even if you have a piece of old clothing that is of stretchy knit or stretchy material, that will work also.
Heat Resistant Batting : Amazon has 3 pieces of 45 x18 for $15
Pen, Pencil, Notebook* : In case you want to take notes
Other optional items -
Seam gauge* - $7
Duck bill scissors* - $10 - $20
Pinking shears* - $10
